This question never really crossed my mind until last year, when I found myself sitting in my car, overwhelmed with anxiety before a major presentation. As negative thoughts spiraled – ‘I’m not prepared enough,’ ‘I’ll probably mess up,’ ‘Everyone will judge me’ – I suddenly caught myself. In that moment of awareness, I realized how automatically my mind defaulted to these self-defeating patterns. And when I finally asked myself about my thought patterns, the answer changed my life.
How often do we take inventory of our thoughts? Here’s the thing: most of us don’t. And even when we do, it’s usually through a negative lens. Scientists call this the ‘negativity bias’ – our brain’s tendency to focus more on potential threats and problems than positive experiences. It’s an ancient survival mechanism that, in today’s world, often does more harm than good.
💭 Do you judge yourself or criticize every little thing, picking apart your appearance, decisions, or achievements?
💭 Do you dwell on what’s missing in your life or replay past mistakes like a broken record?
💭 Or do you intentionally focus on love, joy, and compassion – even in tough times?
Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” There’s profound truth in this simple statement that modern psychology confirms: our thoughts create neural pathways that shape our perception of reality and, ultimately, our lives.
❎ If your thoughts are full of negativity, self-doubt, or frustration, it’s no surprise when you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or drained. These thought patterns become self-fulfilling prophecies, coloring everything we experience.
✅ But when you shift your focus to thoughts that build you up – thoughts of gratitude, hope, and possibility – you begin to see life through a new lens. This isn’t just positive thinking; it’s about aligning your mind with truth and purpose.
For me, this realization was deeply tied to my faith. Spending time in prayer and reflection fuels my soul and connects me to my purpose. Through daily scripture meditation and mindful prayer, I’ve learned to catch negative thought spirals early and redirect them toward God’s promises and truth.
If you’re struggling with your thoughts, here’s where to start:
✨ Pause and reflect. Take a moment each day to ask yourself: What am I thinking about? Are these thoughts building me up or tearing me down? Try setting three daily alarm reminders to check in with your thought patterns.
✨ Speak the truth to yourself. Replace self-criticism with affirming truths: I am enough. I am loved. I am created with a purpose. Write these truths on sticky notes and place them where you’ll see them regularly.
✨ Use your spiritual practice and/or mindfulness to refocus your thoughts and anchor yourself in truth. Create a morning routine that includes prayer, meditation, or scripture reading before engaging with the world’s noise.
Your thoughts shape your reality – this isn’t just a nice saying; it’s a transformative truth. What will you choose to focus on today? Take a moment right now to write down three recurring thoughts you’d like to transform.
